The National Cohesion and Integration Commission NCIC has opened investigations against former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Cabinet Secretaries Aden Duale and Geofrey Ruku among other leaders.
In a press statement, NCIC Chairman Bishop Kepha Omae has said that there shall be no sacred cows in the fight against incitement.
Other leaders who are under investigations include Busia Governor Paul Nyongesa Otuoma, Mandera Deputy Governor Ali Maalim Mohamud, Sirisia MP John Waluke, and Wanjiku Muhia, David Gikaria, Tipape Naini Musa and Dr Dennis Adison Ouma.
“No individual, regardless of office or standing, is beyond the reach of the law where credible allegations of hate speech or ethnic incitement arise,” the statement read.
Duale has been the subject of outcry following his comments deemed to be derogatory aimed at the Agikuyu community.
Leaders across the political divide, including those supporting President William Ruto have demanded an immediate apology from the Cabinet Secretary who is considered a confidant of the President.
“We are responsible for hoisting the President to the State House. Leaders in government should respect us.” Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru who is equally an ally of the President has said.
Omae said the investigations are being undertaken in accordance with the law, stressing that all those named are entitled to due process.
The commission has however said it will not solely react to social media videos but will base investigations on official complaints forwarded to it.
