The government has vowed to intensify the crackdown on illicit and potentially toxic alcoholic drinks following reports of deaths and serious health concerns among residents in Kiambu County and other parts of the country.

Speaking in Limuru, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki warned traders and manufacturers involved in producing or selling dangerous alcoholic drinks that the government would take firm action against them.

Kindiki said some unscrupulous traders were disguising poisonous substances as alcoholic beverages, putting the lives and health of Kenyans at risk.

“We will not allow anyone to pretend that they are selling alcohol when, in reality, they are selling poison to our people,” he said.

He cited recent deaths in Kiambu and Kirinyaga, saying the incidents had demonstrated the urgent need for stronger enforcement against illicit alcohol.

The Deputy President said the government would inspect alcoholic beverage manufacturers to ensure their premises and products comply with quality and public health standards before the drinks reach the market.

He also warned individuals who allegedly manufacture illicit alcohol without proper facilities by mixing chemicals and distributing the products to consumers.

“Your days are numbered. We are coming for you,” Kindiki warned.

He said the government had previously confronted major security threats, including terrorism, and would similarly pursue those involved in the manufacture and distribution of poisonous alcohol.

He said the illicit alcohol trade was causing distress among families, with mothers, young people and children bearing the consequences.

The remarks come amid heightened government attention on illicit and substandard alcoholic drinks, particularly following reports of deaths and illnesses linked to suspected toxic alcohol in parts of Kenya.

Kindiki called for sustained enforcement to protect young people and communities from alcoholic products that fail to meet health and safety requirements.
