The Justice and Equity Council has raised alarm over what it describes as a growing wave of organized “goonism,” warning that the trend poses a serious threat to public safety, democratic freedoms, and national stability.
In a statement the council’s chairman Sebastian Onyango strongly condemned the increasing use of coordinated groups to carry out violence and intimidation.
The council has warned that such groups appear to be operating with impunity and, in some cases, may be linked to individuals with access to illicit funds.
“With impunity taking root, failure to act decisively will only embolden those who seek to destabilize our country through fear and violence,” Onyango said.
The council pointed to credible concerns that proceeds from corruption and fraudulent dealings within public institutions could be fueling these groups, enabling them to disrupt public order and escalate political tensions.
It described the alleged connection between financial misconduct and organized street-level violence as a dangerous development that must be urgently addressed.
The council called on the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate the funding and coordination of such groups, and to take decisive legal action against those found responsible.
The council has further called on all state agencies to remain neutral, professional, and non-partisan, warning that selective enforcement of the law could undermine democracy and erode public trust.
