A family is demanding answers from Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital in Nairobi following the death of Mary-Anne, a mother of three, after childbirth, with her husband accusing medical staff of negligence and failure to communicate with him about her condition.
Speaking to the media, her husband, Gibon, said he had left his wife at the hospital in good condition and expected to return to reunite with her and their newborn, only to learn that she had died.
Gibon said his wife had informed him that doctors were preparing to take her to the operating theatre, but he maintained that no member of the medical team contacted him to explain any subsequent deterioration in her condition.
“When I arrived at the hospital in the morning, I found that my wife had died, yet I was the one who had gone there, and nobody had called me.”Gibon said, expressing frustration over how he learned of his wife’s death.
The grieving husband said his wife had attended antenatal clinics throughout her pregnancy without experiencing complications, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding her death.
He accused medical staff at the facility of negligence, saying he had arrived carrying clothes for the newborn, expecting to return home with his family.
Gibon’s brother-in-law, Sibota Job Marube, also criticised service delivery at the hospital, urging its management to prioritise timely medical attention and the welfare of patients.
The family further questioned the circumstances surrounding Mary-Anne’s treatment, with Gibon’s sister, Faith Kemunto, demanding justice and an explanation of what led to her death.
“We want justice. We want to know how our sister died?” Kemunto said.
She also expressed concern about the three children left behind, saying they were asking questions about their mother that the family was struggling to answer.
