Senior government officials have inspected ongoing preparations at the 10,000-seater stadium in Wajir that is set to host 2026 Madaraka Day celebrations.

The inspection was led by Principal Secretaries including Raymond Omollo together with Patrick Mariru and Teresia Mbaika, who are members of the National Celebrations Steering Committee overseeing the preparations.

The team toured the ongoing upgrade works at the 10,000-seater Wajir Stadium, which has been designated as the main venue for the national event.

Speaking during the inspection, Omollo said preparations are progressing well and that the government is keen to ensure the region is ready to host the national celebration.

“The upgrade of Wajir Stadium and the surrounding infrastructure is progressing well. We are working closely with all relevant agencies to ensure that the venue and its supporting facilities are ready to host Kenyans for this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations,” he said.

According to the officials, the preparations go beyond the stadium itself and include improvements to key supporting infrastructure to ensure the success of the celebrations. These include the upgrade of access roads, airport facilities, security installations and public amenities to facilitate smooth movement, safety and hospitality for residents and visitors expected to attend the national event.

Ps Omollo noted that the coordinated preparations reflect the government’s commitment to delivering a well-organized national celebration.

“This is a multi-agency effort involving both national and county governments to ensure that all logistical, security and infrastructural requirements are in place ahead of the celebrations,” he said.

Also present during the inspection was Ahmed Muhumed Abdi alongside senior officials from both the national and county governments.

In February 2026, President William Ruto disclosed that the government allocated 900 million shillings towards the stadium construction. He said the project aims to advance sports development and stimulate the local economy.

Madaraka Day, marked annually on June 1, commemorates the day in 1963 when Kenya attained internal self-rule from British colonial administration.
