Kiambu and Nairobi Counties are leading in the fatalities of mob justice across the country with 58 and 55 respectively since January 2025 till date.

In a response to questions from Senators, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has intimated the high numbers are due to the public mistrust of police agencies and the justice process.

“People don’t generally don’t believe in the judicial system and the justice system of the country. The answer is always if this person is taken to court he will be released on bail,” stated Murkomen.

This is after Kisumu Senator Tom Ojienda asked that the Cabinet Secretary provide details on the registered incidents of mob justice and related fatalities from January 2025 to date.

In his response, Murkomen further revealed that Kisumu County follows in the number of mob justice fatalities at 36, Embu County had 33, Machakos County has 22 and Vihiga County recorded 20 cases.

At the same time, Migori County had 19 fatalities recorded while Kilifi and Kisii Counties had 18 cases each.

However, the CS added measures have been put in place to enhance police responsiveness to mob justice incidents with police stations having a team dedicated to respond to such scenarios.

“National government officers are sensitizing citizens on the importance of informing the police when they arrest suspects or when incidents occur. The service standing orders require all police stations to maintain a standby team to respond to incidences including mob justice,” said Murkomen.

The latest case of mob justice to hit headlines was the Kakamega incident whereby George Olande Otobe was attacked in retaliation after allegedly attacking another attendant of the Linda Mwananchi rally on the 21st of February 2026.

POLITICAL RALLIES

Murkomen has once again slammed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and the United Opposition for allegedly organizing goons to infiltrate their rallies to later blame it on the state.

“There are parts of this country that before elected leaders go for any function they first have to spend money hiring either goons or gangs to accompany them to those functions,” claimed the Interior Cabinet Secretary.

He averred that this poses threat to national security because those organizing are in both sides of the political divide and in different levels of campaign.

Besides this, Murkomen has called on politicians to stop utilizing young people and arming them to cause violence with rungus and provoking police officers.

“It is important for political actors on both sides of the political divide but specifically those who held rallies recently and those who organized maandamano last year to stop using young people,” he said.

During the Linda Mwananchi rally held in Kakamega County on the 21st of February 2026, a teargas canister was lobbed at the crowd while the United Opposition has been adamant for prosecution of officers it claimed were involved in the attack at Witima ACK church in Nyeri County on Sunday January 25th 2026.
