Siaya County Governor James Bob Aggrey Orengo has said kenya’s democracy is retrogressing instead of advancing 36 years since the inaugural Saba saba march in 1990.
Speaking to the press in Nairobi’s Central Business District Orengo who was among the key figures who were arrested at Kamkunji grounds during the first sabasaba march has said the ideals that they fought for have been shelved by the current regime.
“The foundation on which the struggle was built on has not been met.” Orengo said.
The multi-party crusader was part of the team that was arrested after defying a KANU Government order barring the converging at the historic Kamkunji grounds.
Others were arrested include Martin Shikuku, Kenneth Matiba, Charles Rubia, and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.
Orengo has decried the human right situation accusing succesive regimes of reneging on the gains made since the first Saba Saba Day match.
“People are still being abducted, there are extrajudicial killings and people are still being detained on tramped up charges.” Orengo has lamented.
While recognizing the significance of the Gen-Z led anti-government demos of 2024-25 Orengo has demanded the current administration to address the concerns of the youth.
“People are unhappy. The issues brought up during the Gen-Z demos have not been addressed.” He has added.
Around 20 people were killed, hundreds were injured and over 1,000 protesters were arrested in Nairobi and other towns during the 1990 demos.
The demos were part of the clamour for political pluralism that would be achieved a year later when the then President Daniel Moi repealed Section 2A of the constitution in 1991.
