A student died at the Kapsabet School for the Deaf in Nandi County after reportedly falling into a septic tank earlier on Thursday, 12th March 2026.

According to reports, 11 learners stood on top of a 20-foot-long septic tank in a bid to catch a glimpse of President William Ruto’s motorcade that was passing by the school early morning.

“Rescue began at 9: 20, by 9: 25am 11 students who had fallen into the septic had been retrieved and were rushed to Kapsabet Referral Hospital,” said Angeline Kirui , the County Executive committee member in charge of health in Nandi County.

President Ruto was on his way to the nearby Kapsabet Girls’ High School, where the Head of State was expected for an official tour.

The students reportedly stood atop the septic tank that according to locals was constructed a longtime ago and had become structurally faulty following ongoing rains.

The head of state momentarily halted his tour of Nandi and visited the school to check on the situation at the school.

“I have gotten a chance to visit you and I would like to send condolence to the affected. I have directed the county government to embark on improving the situation at this school.” President Ruto said.
