Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has waded into the recent attacks on the media by President William Ruto terming them an affront to democracy.

Speaking at his Wamunyoro Home Gachagua has termed the sustained attack against the press as an effort to bastardize the media ahead of the upcoming polls and to compel them not to highlight government’s failures.

“William Ruto leave journalist alone, leave the media houses alone, do not take us to the dark days of the 80’s and 90’s.” The DCP Party boss has said.

The President has been on a back and forth with the Standard Media Group accusing it of doing the bidding of its majority shareholder Gideon Moi.

The attack against the Mombasa Road based media house comes on the backdrop of news pieces emanating from the standard Newspaper that have been critical of Ruto and his regime.

Citing the attempted abduction of Standard Group Associate Editor Nixon Kiplimo in Nakuru, Gachagua has called on Kenyans to stand in solidarity with the press.

“I ask the 55 million Kenyans not to tolerate the attack on the media after they are done with the media they will come for you. Don’t just stand by as the media is attacked.” Gachagua has said.

The opposition principal has told the government to focus on delivering basic services such as education and health instead of cracking down on the press.
