Seven students linked to the fire at Utumishi Girls Academy, which killed 16 students, have been arraigned at the Naivasha law courts.

The arraignment of the seven in court follows their arrest on Friday, May 29, 2026, in which the students were arrested in connection with the deadly dormitory fire at Utumishi Girls’ Academy that claimed the lives of 16 learners and left dozens injured.

The learners have been brought to court by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

The Directorate is set to seek more time from the court to complete investigations into the matter.

The DCI has revealed that the learners in their statements following their arrest told investigators that they were disgruntled with changes to the examination timetable, the introduction of a fee for a cultural event, and influence from peers after a nearby boys’ school staged a strike.

“Investigators have conducted extensive interviews with students, teaching staff and other witnesses, while forensic teams carry out a detailed review of available CCTV footage,” the DCI stated.

The arson act was captured on a CCTV video that has so far been made public.

The DCI has stated that the plans to set the dormitory ablaze were hatched at around 9pm Wednesday night and executed about three hours later.
