The Council of Governors (Cog) has condemned the call by Senate to arrest governors who fail to appear before the County Public Accounts Committee.

Led by the council’s chair FPCA Ahmed Abdullahi, the governors have termed the attempt to arrest Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja as disproportionate exercise of force.

During a press briefing on Tuesday 31st March 2026, Abdullahi said that the council has resolved to demand the immediate withdrawal of the alleged warrants of arrests.

The CoG Chair has stated: “This matter is not a personal issue concerning one governor, but a collective decision made by the Council following continuous extortion, unnecessary harassment and intimidation by four members of the said committee.”

The governors have claimed to have lodged a complaint with the leadership of the Senate after 43 out of the 47 governors raised matters with respect to harassment, intimidation and embarrassment at Senate committees.

Abdullahi has further called it a political standoff while claiming there was no arrest warrant against Governor Sakaja.

“You cannot arrest a governor on the basis of a letter from the Senate clerk. So I want to tell our policemen not be misused. This is a political matter.” Said Abdullahi.

The statement from the governors comes days after the Senate County Public Accounts Committee (CPAC) ordered IG Kanja to produce Sakaja and his Samburu counterpart, Jonathan Lelelit, for failing to appear before the committee.
