The Ministry of Health has launched the perinatal maternal Death surveillance and Response Committee that aims at looking into the rising maternal and newborn deaths in the country.

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale said that the government is reviewing transformations in the Social Health Authority cover to ensure that maternal health is prioritized.

“The ministry of health has already released a policy directive to the Social Health Authority (SHA) to enable maternity reimbursement of qualifying level 2 and level 3 facilities. This was agreed during a summit on the 10th of December signed between the Council of Governors and the two levels of government,” Duale has said.

Duale has further highlighted, “There is therefore no excuse that SHA is not reimbursing at level 2 and level 3.”

The CS further called on counties to help in the development of healthcare and said that the ministry would deregister any incompetent healthcare workers for negligence especially where maternal and newborn health is concerned.

Duales statement comes at a time when it is estimated that 15-16 women die every day in the country due to pregnancy related deaths.
