The National Parents Association says parents should not be blamed for the strikes and the increasing cases of school fires being witnessed across the country.

According to the Association, the lack of effective communication between students and teachers is one of the main factors contributing to the unrest.

“There is a prolem with our schools; why aren’t the students burning their mattresses at home? Why aren’t they throwing away their food? The Associations Chairman David Silas Abuhatsa has posed.

The chairman, says students need better channels to air their grievances before situations escalate.

“The management of schools need to explain to us why their learners are rioting. The unrest is in just afew schools; what are these schools getting wrong?” He has added.

“They need to sit down and listen to learners compalints and find ways to address them.”Abuhatsa said.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Truth Fm Newspoint, Abuhatsa urged the government to convene an emergency meeting bringing together all education stakeholders to seek lasting solutions to the crisis.

He also criticized the Ministry of Education for failing to adequately involve parents in the management of the education sector despite being key stakeholders in their children’s education.

“ There are ongoing meetings to address this issue, however Parents are not represented in the meetings. How does the government then come back to blame parents when it excludes them from such vital meetings?” He asked.

Abuhatsa further called on teachers, especially school principals, to maintain cordial and constructive relationships with parents.

So far, more than seventy schools have been affected by unrest, with Nakuru County recording the highest number of incidents. Fourteen schools in the county have already sent students home following the disturbances.
