The President further handed Sawe a customized number plate inscribed with 1:59:30, the exact time he broke the world record and in return Sawe awarded the President with an autographed pair of shoes used on the course.
The Head of State recognized the hero’s effort noting that the victory communicates the great Kenyan spirit of unity and resilience.
“You have made us proud, Sebastian, you have lifted our flag very high and shown the world the strength of the Kenyan spirit,” Said Ruto.
“Above all you have reminded us that what seemed impossible is within reach if only we dare to believe in ourselves to push our highest aspirations with courage consistency and resolve,” added the President.
He also remembered the effort shown by those who have gone before current heroes in putting Kenya on the global map.
Sawe has expressed his gratitude to the government and the people who supported him in the journey to break the world record.
“I am grateful to the President of Kenya and to everyone who has worked on making this dream come true. Thank you for the effort put in place to boost the sports sector and we would not let you down, but we will continue to bring in more victory,” Sawe said.
Speaking at the same event, leaders noted the consistent victory that Sawe has displayed in various events such as the Berlin and London marathons in 2025.
Sawe who hails from Ndonyongaria village, Mutwot, Chesumei Subcounty in Nandi County secured gold at the London Marathon after clocking 1:59:30 to become the first man to run a competitive marathon under two hours.
