A group of professionals and Business men are now calling for the splitting of Kiambu County to create a proposed Thika County saying residents are currently under represented.

The group through the Thika stakeholder’s forum says the proposed Thika County should include Juja, Ruiru, and Thika Town and Gatundu North and South constituencies.

“The splitting of Kiambu County with a population of more than 2.4 Million people to two counties will ease service delivery.” Juma Hendi the leader of the forum has said.

The group has dismissed claims that the ongoing push for county status conflicts with the separate campaign seeking conferment of city status to Thika Municipality.

“The two processes do not conflict at all. City status concerns the elevation of Thika Municipality into a city, while the county proposal seeks to split Kiambu County into two administrative units to improve governance, service delivery and representation,” Hemedi explained.

The group has filed a petition with the senate to consider the creation of the new county.

They say the splitting will cure what they have termed as ‘historical injustices’ created by the 2010 constitution.

“Today we made the second step to creation of Thika county by petitioning the senate.  The first step was made when we gave our proposals to the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO).” The group has added.

However, the proposal by the group is likely to face headwinds given that the Constitution of Kenya 2010 states that the number of counties can only be altered through a referendum.
