Utumishi Girls’ Academy has re-opened today, Thursday 2nd July 2026 following its indefinite closure after a deadly dormitory fire on May 28, 2026.

The re-opening is being done in phases with Form Four reporting on 2nd July 2026 while the Form Three learners will return on Monday, July 6, 2026.

Grade 10 students are set to report on Thursday, July 9, 2026.

The reopening follows a consultative meeting held on Monday, 29th June 2026 between parents, school management, and Ministry of Education officials.

The meeting addressed safety concerns raised after the tragedy that claimed the lives of 16 students and injured 79 others.

Amongst the concerns raised was the issue of dormitory with parents demanding for the construction of a new dormitory, additional classrooms and improved water supply.

“The government has constructed a stadium worth millions within two months but has failed to provide funds to construct a new dormitory for our children,” quipped a parent.

“If we do not have a new dormitory within one month, then we will mobilize for funds and do it ourselves,” added the parent.

School administrators confirmed that learners have been accommodated in temporary boarding facilities to ensure academic activities continue uninterrupted while construction of permanent dormitories is being planned.

This is while minors accused of causing the fire tragedy remain in custody.

The minors denied the allegations and the case is set for a mention on the 22nd of September 2026 to determine if pre-bail reports are ready.
