The youth have been urged not to shy away from getting married with members of the clergy terming the institution as a key pillar of social life.

Speaking during a mass wedding at St. Monica Catholic Church in Kajiado County where 22 couples were married in a joint ceremony the clergy have urged the youth not to be discouraged from marrying or getting married.

The joint wedding was officiated by Archbishop John Mbida from the Archdiocese of Lodwar .

“The marriages that have been formalized today should be an example to the youth that it is possible, they should not lose hope.” The clergy said.

The call to the youth comes at a time that the youth are increasingly preferring not to get married.

Recent data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics and the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey reveals that young adults increasingly view marriage as optional with about half of Kenyan men now reaching old age without ever tying the knot, and over a third of young women between 18 and 49 have never been married.

The couple that formalized their marriage have described marriage in superlatives.

“Don’t be afraid to get married. Marriage is sweet; when you get your sole mate you are going to enjoy marriage.” Gobert Muirui one of the brides has advised.

The youth have further been advised to seek the church’s blessings before embarking into marital life.
