Electricity distributing company Kenya Power has expressed concerns over the increased adoption of solar by Kenyans.

Speaking during the release of the company’s half-year results, Kenya Power C.EO/M.D. Joseph Siror has said solar power poses a threat to the security of the National Grid.

“Solar is ideally available during the day. At night, homes connected to solar return to the national grid, leading to a sudden surge in demand in the grid posing a threat to the safety of the grid.”

Eng. Siror has, however, said that KPLC has no problem with solar as long as those using it go completely off grid.

“We are not as concerned with the loss of customers to solar as much as we are concerned with the effect of solar on the safety of our grid.” Siror has added.

Kenyans have in the recent past embraced the use of solar power with statistics indicating a 20% annual increase on the number of homes adopting solar.

Among other reasons, solar is proving attractive to Kenyans due to its affordability.
