Reeling from the shock and grief over the death of Former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, mourners flocked to Moi International Sports Centre–Kasarani for public viewing of his body on Thursday, 16th October 2025.

However, chaos ensued at the Stadium and police allegedly shot at the mourners and three people lost their lives. The victims -all unarmed civilians – were allegedly gunned down by police officers in what human rights groups have termed as cold-blooded executions.

‎‎According to autopsy results released on Tuesday, 21st October 2025 at the Nairobi Funeral Home, 36-year-old Evans Kiche, a father of three, died from a single bullet to the head that shattered his skull and damaged his brain. His distraught brother, Gilbert Okeyo, condemned the killing, questioning the police’s action. “Why did the police use live bullets on mourners when they could have used safer means?”

‎Kiche’s cousin, Moses Kaumba, described him as a peaceful man who had gone to Kasarani “only to mourn his hero, Raila Amolo Odinga,” adding that his death was senseless and cruel.

‎Kaumba confirmed that the deceased will be buried at his home at Kanjira, Karachuonyo constituency, Homabay County on November 10, 2025.

‎‎Another victim, 35-year-old Vincent Otieno Ogutu, succumbed to a gunshot wound to the chest that pierced through his heart. A bullet fragment was recovered from his body. His brother-in-law, Paul Nyalo, said the shot was clearly intended to kill him. ‎“If you look at where he was hit, Vincent was shot with a motive to end his life,” Nyalo lamented.

‎Both the father, Meshack Ogutu Okode and his widow, Yvonne Akinyi Empire have called for justice and demanded the government to give answers to the unfortunate kin’s death, saying she has been left to raise three young children alone.

‎“May justice please prevail for my husband” she pleaded tearfully.

‎The third victim, Jidah Burka, was confirmed to have died from a single gunshot wound to the head. The bullet entered from the front and exited at the back of his head killing him instantly. His body has since been released to the family, and his burial took place at the Kariakor Muslim Cemetery.

‎‎The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has since launched investigations into the killings. ‎

Human rights defender Hussein Khalid strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a manifestation of ‘trigger-happy policing’ and accusing an alleged rogue elite squad within the police service of targeting civilians.

‎“This is not policing, it is execution… the Trigger happy  police must find ways to maintain public order without killing innocent, unarmed people.” Khalid said.

‎The recent Kasarani police shooting has aggravated the already insensitive national problem of police brutality and it has also sparked nationwide calls for accountability and renewed debate on police excesses in Kenya, as families of the slain mourners demand one thing — Justice!
