All ten suspected cases of Ebola that were under medical watch at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret (MTRH) have turned out negative.

MTRH Chief Executive officer Dr. Phillip Kirwa has said most of the patients instead tested positive for Malaria and have been put under anti-malarial treatment

Ebola exhibits signs such as fever, muscle ache, headache, fatigue and loss of appetite which is similar to Malaria.

“We have also received all the necessary material we require for the isolation and treatment of Ebola cases and protective gear for staff,” said Dr Kirwa.

The hospital manager said the facility has enough isolation capacity to hold and monitor suspected cases of Ebola virus.

The facility has also confirmed an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) capacity of 30 patients that can be deployed of necessary.

MTRH is the biggest referral hospital in the western part of the country and is key to the fight against Ebola given that it handles major referrals from counties such as Busia, Bungoma Kakamega Transnzoia and West Pokot that border Uganda.

Uganda has so far recorded 20 cases and 2 deaths with Kenya’s first case travelling through Uganda from The DRC.
