The first batch of contacts who were under monitoring for Ebola Virus Disease have been allowed to go home.

The batch that is linked to the index case, a Kenyan who was working in the DRC and flew back and later succumbed to the virus, have completed the mandatory 21-day quarantine duration set for the Ebola Virus.

“Each of the twenty contacts was assessed against the release criteria, including 21 days without any symptoms since their last exposure. They do not pose any risk to their families, colleagues or neighbours, and we ask communities to welcome them back home warmly,” Director General of Health Dr. Patrick Amoth said.

The remaining 98 contacts are set to be released by November 03 if they do not exhibit signs and sympoms of the Ebola Virus disease.

All the cases are linked to the first case of Ebola meaning Kenya is not battling a communal spread of the disease.

The Ministry has allayed any fears about closing down the country due to the cases of the virus.

“Travel, trade and public gatherings are not restricted. Anyone with fever, unusual tiredness, muscle or joint pains, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhoea or unexplained bleeding, especially after possible contact with a case, or history of travel to DRC should seek care promptly and share their exposure history with the health worker.” The ministry has said.

The total number of confirmed cases remains at nine, with two deaths recorded, translating to a case fatality rate of 22.2 per cent.

The seven patients receiving treatment are stable, according to the ministry.
