Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has challenged young people to use digital platforms responsibly, warning that social media can either make or destroy lives depending on how it is used.

Speaking during the opening of the 21st Plenary Assembly of the Association of the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA) in Nairobi on Monday, 20th July 2026, Mudavadi has said most young people have lost visa, study or employment opportunities due to what they had earlier posted across social media platforms.

“I urge you to exercise personal responsibility online. Ensuring that your social media use safeguards rather than jeopardizes opportunities such scholarships, visas and employment.” Mudavadi has said.

Mudavadi has revealed that as a Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary he has witnessed young people being denied opportunities because of undesirable content on their social media accounts.

“Please be careful you could lose your scholarship or opportunity elsewhere,” He has warned.

Referencing the recent cancelation of a young African football referee who lost an opportunity to officiate at the 2026 FIFA World Cup Mudavadi has remarked that the scrutiny of social media posts applies in all sectors.

This is after concerns emerged during the vetting process.

Mudavadi’s warning reflects a broader trend in global immigration systems, where several countries increasingly consider applicants’ online presence as part of visa and security screening.
